Assessment

Students enjoy making various types of patterns. They soon encounter the big ideas about patterns.

But some ideas are more difficult than others and take time to develop. Learning about patterns seems to be easy for some students but more difficult for others who can struggle with misunderstandings.

When planning learning experiences, it is important to find out what students have already learnt and what they still need to learn. This step is also a component of good teaching.

Approaches to assessment

Some valuable approaches to assessing knowledge of patterns are observation, analysis of student work, individual interviews and group assessment.
