Time is of the Essence

Description: Time is a confusing and complex topic for many children. While the curriculum focusses on the reading of clocks and calendars, research has shown that there is more to this topic than being able to ‘tell the time’. This presentation explores the meaning of time and identifies four major Components of time that need to be comprehended to develop a deep understanding. A Framework of Learning and Teaching of Time is explained with ideas for lessons to suit primary school students.

Mathematics Lesson Study in Japan: A structured problem-solving lesson in congruent figures

Description: In collaboration with the International Math-teacher Professionalization Using Lesson Study project (Project IMPULS) at Tokyo Gakugei University, AAMT is offering a webinar for Australian teachers that looks at a Japanese structured problem-solving lesson in mathematics. The lesson is presented in the context of Lesson Study.
The webinar will be based on a video-recorded lesson How can we draw congruent quadrilaterals? from a Grade 5 classroom in a Japanese public school.
The video, which has English subtitles, its accompanying lesson plan in English and a mathematical task for the lesson will be available online for viewing and examination before the webinar.
We recommend that webinar participants spend approximately 75 minutes attempting the task, carefully examining the lesson plan, and watching the video recording of the 50-minute lesson.
We expect that Australian teachers will be interested to see how a structured problem-solving lesson is planned and implemented in Japanese schools. About a dozen Australian educators have participated in IMPULS programs in Japan and we hope that several of these will participate in the webinar.
The webinar will attempt to highlight some of the key features of the post-lesson discussions that play a key role in Lesson Study, and will include expert commentary from Australian and Japanese educators about the problem-solving approach used in the lesson, as well as opportunities for comments and questions from participating teachers.

Targeted Teaching

Description: The Growing Mathematically project for teaching multiplicative thinking skills provides teachers with assessment booklets, a Learning and Assessment Framework (LAF) and targeted teaching resources. Teachers conduct the assessment with their students. The results are converted to a zone in the LAF for multiplicative thinking. Armed with this information, teachers can use the targeted teaching interventions to focus their teaching at the right level for the students. This is a powerful and evidence-based way to improve the multiplicative skills of students. In the webinar we will discuss the strategies and practices of using targeted teaching interventions for multiplicative thinking skills.

Demonstration of an inquiry-based probability lesson (Maths 300)

Description: This webinar is split into two parts. In the first part, participants are invited to view a pre-recorded video of an online maths class in a leading primary school in Shanghai (using a Mastery pedagogical approach). The Shanghai experience in home-based mathematics teaching during the pandemic
Description: The webinar is presented by mathematics researchers and teachers in Shanghai. They will discuss their experiences in rapidly adapting to home-based learning of mathematics for school students during school closures. The webinar is led by Professor Zhang Minxuan, President of the Research Institute for International and Comparative Education at Shanghai Normal University.
