Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences developed in 1983 has been very influential in education world wide. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential. All students will have abilities and learning strengths in more than one intelligence. The Multiple Intelligences theory aligns with the pedagogies for differentiated and personalised learning. These intelligences are:
- Linguistic - word smart
- Logical-mathematical - number/reasoning smart
- Spatial -picture smart
- Bodily-Kinesthetic -body smart
- Musical -music smart
- Interpersonal -people smart
- Intrapersonal -self smart
- Naturalist -nature smart
If a teacher is having difficulty reaching a student in the more traditional linguistic or logical ways of instruction, the theory of multiple intelligences suggests several other ways in which the material might be presented to facilitate effective learning. (Thomas Armstrong).
