Statistical investigations
Although the focus of student learning in investigations may be on a particular statistical concept, they also provide the opportunity for students to gain skills in the four proficiencies of the Australian Curriculum:
- Fluency
- Understanding
- Problem solving
- Reasoning.
Assessment of the proficiencies can be included as criteria when evaluating the student work generated from a statistical investigation.
The Statistical Investigations: Rubric has four criteria that relate to the proficiencies:
- Knowledge
- Method
- Purposes
- Forms.
This rubric can be adapted to focus on the particular statistical learning outcomes targeted in an investigation.
Fluency is demonstrated through choosing and applying statistical tools, such as graphical representations to organise data (Knowledge).
Understanding is demonstrated through the way in which statistical concepts are expressed in the analysis of the data and the conclusions drawn (Purposes).
Problem Solving is demonstrated through organising an investigation, choosing appropriate data collection methods and evaluating proposed solutions (Method).
Reasoning is demonstrated through making comparisons, explaining decisions and justifying conclusions (Knowledge, Forms).
