More Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teachers Initiative (MATSITI)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers are significantly under-represented in schools, comprising approximately 1% of the teaching community compared to Indigenous students (who comprise 5% of the total school student population).

Increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers is a key factor in fostering student engagement and improving educational outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.

Progress over the last decade to improve the number and professional capability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers has been patchy across Australian schools and systems, compounded by limited visibility of education workforce data.
